FALL BREWS: Best Brews for Kayak Fishing the River

The fall.  Ahh...what a wonderful time.  To be cliche, the leaves are changing colors and cool air is starting to come it.  Really, in my mind, it means the bass are moving shallower to chase baitfish, and the trees are starting to go dormant, typically leading to slightly better flows on the river.  It might be my favorite time of year to hit the river and catch a few fish, and it is my favorite time of year for beer.

Just like the leaves this time of year, fall beers can range in color from golden yellow, to rich amber, and even to bright red.  Fall beers are usually loaded with more hops than any other season, making this one of the best times of the year to enjoy an IPA.  Extra spiced beers are popular in the fall, but they are not my taste, and they typically don't work on the river.  I mean drinking a pumpkin, on the river, really?  It was also really hard to find the best fall brews in a can.  But anyway...here are the fall beers you need to take with you.

Here are Fish Tattoo's top five Fall Brews:

Grand Canyon Black Iron IPA
Black Iron IPA from Gran Canyon Brewing Company in a beer that is packed with hops, but remains smooth when you first sip it.  The malt is present, and tastes a little grainy, but the hops, like they should be in an IPA, are predominant.  There is some sharpness from the hops when you finish, but overall, Black Iron IPA is a great beer for fall kayak fishing.

Paulaner Oktoberfest
Ok, I can't lie to you.  I have been unable to find this beer in a can to take on the river with me.  It is the only one on the list that I did not actually drink while on the river.  However, I have had Paulaner's Oktoberfest countless times from bottles and on-tap, and it is one of my favorite Oktoberfest Beers.  It might have been higher on the list if I could have found it in a can in some store somewhere.

Big Sky Brewing Big Sky IPA
Sorry for the shaky picture on this one.  Haha, it had been a long day, but Big Sky I.P.A. hit the spot, let me tell you.  It is a great fall beer.  There is a bitter taste, from plenty of hops, but still the sweet, caramelized malt is present along with a hint of orange citrus.  Big Sky IPA is one of favorite IPA, and is amazing to sip on a breezy fall day fishing the river.

Oskar Blues Deviant Dale's IPA
One of, if not, my favorite India Pale Ales.  Deviant Dale's IPA is a great fall beer, and the "tall boy" can is great  for the river.  It is a well balanced IPA, with some sweet malt and plenty of intense hops that linger even after you swallow.  Citrus and pines are noticeable as you sip, making it perfect for the river.

Santa Fe Brewing Oktoberfest
Spices, grains, and hops. The only two things missing are bratwurst and ploka music.  Santa Fe Brewing's Oktoberfest was my number one choice for a fall kayak fishing beer.  It is easy to drink and maybe a little lighter than other Oktoberfest beers, but is full of flavor.  Plus the can design is pretty sweet.
