Swimbait Experiements

I have never built swimbaits, nor have I done any real research, but I am attempting two right now.  A small bass and a bluegill.  I will try and post pictures as the slow progress continues.  Here are the first two picture I have.

P.S.  I think I am the only liking human who stays at home and carves swimbaits on a Friday night.

  1. Carving swimbaits on a Friday... yep! haha

    Seriously though, keep us posted.

Hey, did you see that article in Rod Maker where the guy used baits for handles? If you come up with something good you might start carving handles that look like baits. Would work good for minima handles.

Other thing, to keep them light you can drill them out so the wood is a thin shell, then use that moldable hard foam to fill in the cavity and then ream it out to fit the rod. Apparently it's quite durable.

I think the hard part would be keeping the hole on center.

  2. Oh, and apparently, I'm the only one who reads fishing blogs before 8am on a Saturday!

(I work on Saturdays so that's my excuse.)

  3. Totally cool! I just got an airbrush and am going to try painting my own swim baits to match the fish in my waters. Keep us updated with your process!

    1. What type of airbrush did you buy? What type of paint do you use?
