Weekend Workings
I had plans to fish with my brother on the San Marcos River on Saturday; however, due to forecasted thunderstorms with hail, we rescheduled. So I sat at home on Saturday and decided to tie some new designs and hit the water on Sunday for some Guadalupe Bass. These are the three I was most excited about coming up with:
The first was a small foam popper to mimic the small frogs that cover the banks of the hill country rivers in the summer. Should be killer for Guadalupe Bass and Sunfish.
Here is a picture of it's belly:
Then a tied a smaller black foam popper with a red belly. Should look something like a small spider, or some type of bug I guess. I bet this smokes the Sunfish:
After talking to Drew Haerer about some of the flies, he had the idea to make the frog into a diver...so I figured I would give it a shot. This is what I came up with:
Well, anyway, I spent my whole day on Saturday tying flies and watching the World Baseball Classic. I did nothing else.
But, I was bummed because the weather on Saturday turned out to be perfect. Upper 70's, no clouds, very light breeze. I coulda, and shoulda hit the river...
I was still going to go on Sunday, so it was ok. However, late on Saturday night, the storm came. Bringing rain and hail that night. I packed my flies anyway. This is the selection that I was going to bring:
I woke up Sunday morning, and hit the road. It was cold out now! Low 40's with 20+ MPH winds. I wasn't ready for this. Anyway, I launched my yak in the South Llano River, and started to fish. The steady 20+ MPH winds with stronger gusts made kayak fishing tough, and the fly fishing even tougher.
I was cold, wet, and frustrated, and I didn't catch a single fish in the first 3 hours I was on the river. Needless to say, after that I paddled back, packed up, and went home. This was the first time that I was just plain miserable while fishing and gave up, in long, long, time.

Bummer on your trip, but your flies look really nice! I'm starting to get into fly fishing. I've dabbled some, but what's a good fly fishing rig to start with? Looking for a general/all-around set-up for fishing central Texas waters. I've researched some, but would love to hear what you think. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI am no expert in fly fishing. I am completely self taught, I don't know much of the correct terminology, but I know what works for me. Depends on what you are really chasing. I love taking my 5 weight for river bass, Guads, and even some sunfish (although it can be overkill for the sunfish, it is still fun!)
